The Mothers' Union
It is a world-wide Anglican organisation whose purpose is to be concerned with all aspects of Christian family life.

The Mothers' Union was founded in 1876 by Mary Sumner. When her first child was born she was overwhelmed by what she saw as the awesome responsibility of parents; to care for the physical well-being, the spiritual nurture and growth of children.

Aims and Objectives of the Mothers' Union
The Aims of the Mothers' Union are the advancement of the Christian religion in the sphere of marriage and family life. In order to carry this out there are five Objectives:
  1. To uphold Christ's teaching on the nature of marriage and to promote its wider understanding.
  2. To encourage parents to bring up their children in the faith and life of the Church.
  3. To maintain a world-wide fellowship of Christians, united in prayer, worship and service.
  4. To promote conditions in society favourable to stable family life and the protection of children.
  5. To help those whose family life has met with adversity.

The Mothers' Union organisation
The central office is at Mary Sumner House in London. Each Diocese has a President who is responsible for the work of the branches in their Diocese via Diocesan Trustees and Group Co-ordinators. St Laurence Branch is in the West Birmingham Group.

Mothers' Union at St Laurence
We support the work of The Mothers' Union on many issues, both in prayer and in practical ways.

Mothers' Union members support projects in a number of ways: knitting baby clothes for premature babies; sewing bereavement gowns for still-born babies; collecting toiletries for women in refuges; sending Christmas cards to prisoners; buying presents for prisoners to give their children at Christmas; and raising money for a wide range of Mothers; Union projects bother overseas and in the UK. We also meet and discuss Social Policy issues as part of Government consultations - such as Domestic Violence, Civil Partnerships etc.

What if I can't come to the meetings?
You don't have to come to all or any of our meetings - if you support our Aim and Objects, please consider being a member.

The Mothers' Union membership is paid at the beginning of each year.

To help with the branch running costs we ask for a voluntary donation each year.
