St Laurence Church has a very long history. A priest in Northfield is mentioned in the Doomsday Book and the current church includes the oldest piece of architecture in Birmingham – the Norman Arch. We are very grateful to our forebears. It is now our turn build on their generosity and stewardship.
Will You be a Part of the Ongoing Journey?
Will you help fund:
the ministry of St Laurence to flourish in the church, the St Laurence Schools and the community?
keeping the church in good order and repair?
attracting a new Rector?
St Laurence Church is part of the Church of England. Despite being ‘the state’ church we receive NO grants from government. We are highly dependent on donations and fundraising. Like many organisations, Covid has taken its toll and now the cost of living increases are biting. We have also had to do a lot of repairs and restoration. We are about to embark on c£20k worth of urgent repairs to the church ceiling. If you are a member of the church, schools, enjoy walking past St Laurence Church or simply looking at this web site, please read on to see how you can help...
How Do We Spend the Money?
On all the usual things that you do at home but big, historic buildings mean bigger bills! Just to insure the church costs over £8,000 a year. As a public building we need to provide fire-extinguishers etc and we even have to pay for our rubbish to be collected. We employ a part-time administrator and part-time caretaker. The Rector and the former Curate are paid through the “Common Fund” system whereby we contribute each month and the Common Fund pays the ministers. It also covers the cost support we receive from the Diocese in church (legal, HR, admin, training, and the education team which supports St Laurence Schools). At the moment we are receiving back more than double what we are paying in (£30k) so we need to significantly increase our contributions.
How Much Should I Give?
No donation is too small; everyone is valued and every one helps. Some people give just a few pounds a month. Some give over £100 per month. See how it mounts up if lots of people join in...
£5 month = £60 a year x 10 people = £600 £10 month = £120 a year x 10 people = £1,200 £30 month = £360 a year x 10 people = £3,600 £50 month = £600 a year x 5 people = £3,000 £100 month = £1,200 a year x 3 people = £3,600 Grand Total: £12,000
and if 50% could Gift Aid we would receive a further £1,500.

Parish Giving Scheme
How it works Donors can set up a Direct Debit with PGS online, over the phone or by filling in a gift form at church. If you pay tax you can Gift Aid your donations. St Laurence Church then promptly receives the gift aid monies. This makes life much easier for our volunteer treasurer. A unique feature of the scheme is the option for the donor to commit in principle to increase their gift annually in line with inflation. This is entirely at the donor’s discretion on an opt-in basis, but it is proving popular with many donors.
